Fracking - What is it?

Fracking....a geological process to get more natural gas from the subsurface

Generally speaking fracking is the process of using a water solution under high pressure to fracture shale formation in order to extract natural gas and oil.

The Topic: Hydrofracking

The water - sand - chemical solution is injected into the shale formation and used to separate layers of shale from one another. Once these crevices have been forced open natural gas and oil can escape from the shale and be captured for fuel. 

Conservationists are concerned with the wastewater polluting the waters supply. The industry is in favor of using this technique because it opens up new sources of fuel for North America.

The Process:

Natural gas or energy companies will drill down deep into the rock formation and allow small explosions to start the initial fracking. Once the shale is broken up natural gas and brine will begin to seep out. The water - sand - chemical solution is then pumped into the newly opened fissures to keep them open and fracture the shale layers further.

Conservationists are again concerned with the potentially carcinogenic chemicals leaching into groundwater. Some scientists are also concerned with the potential for small earth tremors due to the fracturing process.

Overall - Good idea of Bad idea

 The energy industry of course believes this fracking process is necessary in order to increase production of natural gas and oil in America, creating jobs and increasing our energy independence...

Environmentalists believe that the potential for groundwater contamination is too great a risk for some extra natural gas or oil.....

So there you have it....energy independence is very important, but the potential for groundwater contamination is a major concern.

Perhaps as the process continues these industries will alter their process to capture and limit the potential for contamination.

Natural gas Penetrates 6% of Land Drilling Market

The Zeus conference concludes that natural gas has slowly replaced the use of diesel fuel. APG and Prometheus Energy have reported that 70 out of 1200 of Americas land based oil rigs are now powered by gas from LNG, wellheads and pipelines.
This is great news because when you drill for oil you will almost always find an abundance of natural gas above the oil. Generally in the past this gas is set on fire and released into the atmosphere....which is a waste of fossil fuels.


Thanks to American Power Group and their generators oil drilling operations can use their own gas to power the oil rig and the entire site.

The electricity to power these rigs is commonly supplied by large reciprocating engines, according to Lyle Jensen, CEO of American Power Group, a manufacturer of diesel-engine conversion kits. He explained that each rigs is commonly powered by three units, 
ranging in size from 750 hp (0.6 MW) to 1,500 hp (1.1 MW).

About 1,200 people live and work at the campus.
The facility has three 725 kw engines for on-site generation, giving it added security and the ability to “peak shave.” When power rates are at their peak, the facility shaves its bill by generating its own electricity.
Two of the generators run on 100 percent natural gas. The third, a diesel generator, was converted to APG’s Dual fuel. Converting to Dual fuel is cheaper than converting to 100 percent natural gas, since it does not alter the way the engine works. And Dual fuel allows the engine to use 100 percent diesel if natural gas supplies are interrupted.
“In case of emergency, we have the flexibility of using diesel to keep our emergency systems running,” says Juan Mata, plant manager of the Watchtower complex. “Dual fuel allows us to perform without interruption. We have both flexibility and security.

The orders are for the upgrade and conversion of additional diesel generators on drilling rigs for operation using APG's Turbocharged Natural Gas(TM) Dual Fuel System. SourceOne Engine Equipment, LLC, our domestic Dealer/Certified Installer booked the orders. While the end customers were not disclosed for proprietary reasons, a recent industry survey ranked these three companies among the top 50 oil and gas exploration and drilling companies in the United States.

APGI is approved for more engines

American Power Group Corporation (OTCQB: APGI), announced today that its subsidiary, American Power Group, Inc. ("APG"), has received online notification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") that its recent Clean Alternative Fuel Vehicle and Engine Conversion Submission for an additional 22 engine families has been approved for the following additional Outside Useful Life ("OUL") engines:

 --  Cummins ISX (2009 - 2007)
 --  Cummins ISM (2009 - 2007)
 --  Caterpillar C-15 (1997 - 1996)
 --  Caterpillar C-16 (1997)
 

The submission utilized APG's latest V5000 Dual Fuel Turbocharged Natural Gas(TM) technology which is required to meet specific design, componentry, and emission compliance criteria per the EPA Final Rule 40CFR Parts 85 and 86.

The EPA OUL testing for the Volvo and Mack engine families has begun and we anticipate testing and approvals to be completed within the next 60 to 90 days. APGI reports fourth quarter fiscal results

We continue to work closely with the EPA to achieve approvals for additional Outside Useful Life (OUL) and Inside Useful Life (IUL) vehicular conversions. APGI is currently a leader in vehicular EPA OUL approvals with 88 engine families on four different OEM engine platforms. We expect to complete another 100 EPA OUL engine family approvals on four additional OEM engine platforms before the end of the second calendar quarter of 2013. We will begin testing for lower mileage IUL conversions at the University of Houston in January which we anticipate will result in additional IUL OEM engine platform approvals throughout the year."

Mr. Jensen added, "As these EPA approvals are secured, private and corporate fleets will be able to begin their own evaluation testing on a wide range of engine models, providing a platform for us to achieve our initial near term objective of 1,000 conversions per year which would equate to over $10 million of annual revenue. As these fleets move into production, our next targeted goal is 1,000 conversions per month. We anticipate that our recent National Distribution and Master Marketing Agreement with WheelTime Network, LLC will provide us with high-quality certified conversion centers across North America to support these scalability requirements."

I truly love to recycle everything I possibly can. I think we all should join together in the movement to lower our collective carbon footprint.
This blog will be a small initiative to help spread the word of all things Green. Wind, Water and Solar to start with and then later we will search deeper and find new and interesting ways to implement different projects.
First project will be mostly about gaining enough resources to afford a few solar panels and hopefully we will get the ball rolling from there...
